Sydney Swans ruckman Shane Mumford will face a fitness test later this week after suffering a groin strain at last week’s final training session.

Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said the ruckman, who was a late withdrawal from the Swans round seven match against Hawthorn, would need to get through training this week to be considered for selection for Saturday night’s clash with Fremantle at the SCG.

“Unfortunately Shane had a small strain to his groin muscle at training on the Thursday,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“He had a little bit of soreness going in and then aggravated it in the warm up and we had to pull him out the next day.

“He’s about four or five days since doing that and he’s improved, but he’s got to improve enough to be able to train this week in order to play.

“Sometimes with these injuries they are really touch and go the next week.”

Swans defender Rhyce Shaw continues to face a slow recovery from an abdominal injury sustained in round two.

Cameron said the defender, who is also suffering from groin soreness as a result, has made slight improvements this week.

“He suffered that abdominal muscle strain some time ago and whilst that has improved he then got the secondary problem in his groin area,” he said.
“We’re just trying to get on top of that at the moment and it is improving but not quickly.

“At this stage he’s not even quite ready to run, which is frustrating for both him and us.

“He is slowly improving and we’ll have another update next week.”

Cameron also confirmed that Swans utility Lewis Roberts-Thomson’s recovery from a knee injury is on track, with the 29-year-old likely to begin running next week.

“His knee is settling down really well and it’s not really swollen now,” he said.

“He’s starting on his strength work, but he’s not quite ready to run – but we hope to run him next week and then we’ll get him running and training.

“He’s a few weeks away but he’s certainly improving.”

In other injury news, Gary Rohan had a successful return to team training last week, in what was his first team session since he fractured his tibia more than 12 months ago.

Cameron said other than some general soreness, the young Swan pulled up well from the session.

“He did his first team training session and it was a real positive for him,” Cameron said.

“He pulled up a little bit sore in a general sense but he’s got some training ahead of him and he’ll slowly build up his training time and then we can start thinking about when we can declare him ready to play.”
