Bio

Bill Windley began his career with South Melbourne in the VFA in 1886 and was a member of the Club’s 1888, 1889 and 1890 VFA Premiership teams. Thus by the time of the incorporation of the Victorian Football League in 1897, he was already something of a veteran and acknowledged as one of the Club’s early greats. A centreman and rover, he captained the Club in 1900 and 1902, and kicked 36 goals in his 129 VFL games until his retirement in 1905. Bill also served the Club for more than 40 years as ball steward, therefore giving the Club more than 60 years of service. He died in August 1953, at 86 years of age.
