Sydney Swans non-selected players have continued to put forward a case for selection competing against a Greater Western Sydney side on Friday afternoon.

The hit out saw a number of young and experienced Swans putting forward their case for a position in the senior side.

Sam Gray, Colin O’Riordan and Chad Warner were among those players to impress in the shortened format practice match.

“It was outstanding to be able to play against good opposition in the Giants and they have been great at liaising with us to organise matches including today at Giants Stadium,” Development coach Jeremy Laider said.

“It is important that we continue to play for the development of our players but also to allow players to put their name up for senior selection.”

Laidler said Gray and O’Riordan showed their class after starting the season in the AFL side.

“They competed at that AFL level today as we would expect them to so we were impressed with how both of those guys did today,” Laidler said.

“We also were really impressed with Chad Warner who we gave a role to in the midfield to play on one of the Giants inside midfielders.

“It was a really good learning for Chad and he competed really well and was really strong around the contest today.”

Joel Amartey played his first match for some time after sustaining a hamstring injury during the season stoppage.

“It was Joel’s first game back after the hamstring and he started the game really well,” Laidler said.

“He competed at a really strong level today against some quality opposition in Sam Jacobs and Kieren Briggs.

“Joel can hold his head high with how he went this afternoon.”

First year pair Elijah Taylor and Barry O’Connor both caught the eye of Laidler who was impressed with glimpses he saw from both players.

“Elijah on limited minutes showed really good class throughout the game,” he said.

“Barry played everywhere today and played his role and did it to a high level.

“He started down forward and competed against bigger opponents, moved into the ruck and finished off down back.

“He is developing really strongly; he is so coachable and eager to learn which is awesome.”

Laidler said his side were disappointing in their inability to finish the game out and have to continue to work on being more consistent across the whole game.
