Morton to make Swans debut
Forward Mitch Morton is looking forward to making his Swans senior debut against the Bulldogs
Swans goal-sneak Mitch Morton will make his senior debut for the club this Sunday against the Western Bulldogs.
The former Richmond and West Coast forward, who has kicked 75 goals for the Swans reserves in the NEAFL this season, will play his first game in the red and white in Melbourne this weekend.
Speaking to sydneyswans.com.au ahead of his debut match, Morton said he was honoured to be selected in the Swans senior side.
“I think sitting here now; it’s probably the proudest moment of my career to be able to break into a top of the table team,” Morton said.
“I’m very proud of the fact I’ve been working hard all year and have been able to take on board what the coaches have said.
“I’m very, very excited and am trying to contain my excitement at the moment and I can’t wait for Sunday.”
Morton has played 71 games in his AFL career, and kicked 105 goals. The forward was also Richmond’s leading goal-kicker in 2009, with 41 goals for the season.
Morton said he has focused on improving his game across the board since joining the Swans this season.
“I’ve been working on every part of my game for the whole year,” he said.
“Obviously my main strength is my ability offensively, especially to kick and set up goals, but I think I’ve definitely added some other strings to my bow.
“I have learnt to play some different roles within the forward structure, so whichever role I’m called on to play this weekend I’ll be able to.”
The 25-year-old said he was keen to prove himself at senior level for the Swans, and could not wait to get out on Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
“I’ve shown to the playing group that I’m able to do it in the reserves, so now it’s important to show that I can do it in the seniors,” he said.
“The good thing about having a reserves team is that I’ve been able to play the role in the reserves that I would play in the seniors, so it’s just about going out and doing the same job in the seniors this weekend.
“I’m sure the tempo is going to be a bit quicker than what I’ve been playing this year, but I’ve played enough AFL to know that that’s what comes with it, so I just have to step up on game day.”
