Sydney Swans ruckman Shane Mumford has been named in the side that will take on Carlton at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Mumford will return to the team after spending a week on the sidelines with bone bruising in his left knee, which he suffered in the Swans’ round 17 win over St Kilda.

Mumford will replace young forward Sam Reid, who was ruled out of this week’s game with a partial tear to the medial ligament of his right knee.

Swans coach John Longmire said Mumford was given the green light after completing the team’s final training session this morning.

“(Mumford) did a fair bit on Wednesday and did everything he was asked and pulled up really well Thursday,” he said.

“He then did the main session (today), so he will be fine to play.”

In Reid’s absence, Longmire said Mumford was a valuable inclusion for the Swans this week.

“I thought (Mumford’s) form prior to him missing last week was really strong,” he said.

“He was playing good footy around the ball and will come back in this week and play a combination of ruck and forward roles with Pykey.”

Longmire added that Mumford’s contribution would not be limited after only a week on the sidelines.

“He’s only missed the one game so we expect him to come in and play full game time,” he said.

“He’ll be playing full game time and will be right to go.”

With Carlton fighting for a place in the top eight, Longmire said this weekend’s match would be hard fought by the Blues.

“We’re expecting a really good contest from a team that has won three out of the last four and who are in good form,” he said.

Longmire added that Carlton will be bolstered by the inclusion of key players Kade Simpson and Jarrad Waite in Sunday’s match.

“They’ve been able to compensate with a lot of injuries that they’ve had and they are bringing some quality players back into their squad,” he said.

“We are under no illusions that it won’t be a tough contest so we need to make sure we continue to play a good, strong brand of footy for four quarters.

“Carlton is a team who are in good form, and one we’ll try to combat this week.”
