SYDNEY Swans co-captain Adam Goodes will miss Saturday's NAB Cup clash with North Melbourne after he accepted a one-game suspension for rough conduct on Geelong youngster Taylor Hunt.
Goodes was booked for sliding feet-first into Hunt during the second half of the Swans' 16-point loss to the Cats on Friday night.
The incident was assessed as reckless conduct and low impact, meaning Goodes drew an initial penalty of 125 demerit points.
Goodes has an existing bad record of 66 demerit points carried over from the past 12 months, which increases the penalty to 191 points - just shy of a two-game ban.
The early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 143.25 points.
Goodes remains eligible to win the Brownlow Medal.
Swans coach John Longmire said prior to training on Tuesday he had spoken to his co-captain about the incident and Goodes had quickly acknowledged his wrongdoing.
"We spoke about it," he said.
"We had the umpires up here two weeks ago saying you had to be mindful of things like that and Goodesy accepted it straight away.
"The challenge will be what else could he do in that situation, but he accepted it and moved on."
Goodes will now have more carryover points going into the season, but Longmire doesn’t feel there is any disciplinary issue with his skipper.
"Sometimes little things happen on the football field," he said.
"Over 300 games I think his record is pretty sound, two Brownlow Medals, so I think that speaks for itself."
Charge laid:
Adam Goodes, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a level one engaging in rough conduct offence against Taylor Hunt, Geelong, during the second half of the round one NAB Cup match between the Sydney Swans and Geelong, played at Etihad Stadium on Friday February 24, 2012.
In summary, due to his previous carry-over points from within the last 12 months, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea.
Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from Geelong, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a level one offence drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing bad record of 66 demerit points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 191 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 143.25 points and a one-match sanction.
