Were Horse and Duck the ‘Roos that should have been Swans?
That is one of the stories explored in episode three of The Bloods, presented by QBE, which is now available for download.
As the Swans continue to battle to find their feet in Sydney in late 1980s, rival clubs begin to circle the Swans recruiting zone in the Riverina area of New South Wales, with a young John Longmire and Wayne Carey among those to garner interest.
It would take Longmire until 2002 to join the red and white, when arriving as an assistant coach under Rodney Eade and then Paul Roos.
But, as explored in this week’s drop of The Bloods, Longmire’s arrival could have happened more than 10 years sooner.
It is former Swans Development Manager Greg Harris, who recalls with great disappointment, learning of Longmire’s signing to North Melbourne, along with Wayne Carey. Both players were eligible to be recruited to the Swans under the old zoning rules.
Between them, Longmire and Carey would go on to play 472 AFL matches, kicking more than 1200 goals.
Longmire, along with captain courageous Paul Kelly, are among the names to feature in the latest episode of The Bloods, presented by QBE.
