From catering for the players’ nutritional requirements to setting up the change rooms, a group of dedicated Swans staff put in the hard yards to ensure the team’s best performance on game day.

One staff member heavily involved in the team’s pre-game setup is Sydney Swans Logistics Manager, Nick Verhelst.

Verhelst is responsible for ensuring all equipment and property is where it should be before players, coaches and officials arrive for a match.

SwansTV caught up with Verhelst ahead of last weekend’s match against Collingwood at ANZ Stadium.

“I’m responsible for making sure all the equipment and property gets out to the game for when the players and coaches arrive,” Verhelst told Swans TV’s Around the Grounds program.

“We get out to the change rooms early to set everything up.

“We make sure all of the team’s equipment and property is there and set up so when the rest of the management staff arrives they are ready to go straight into their role whether they are the physio, team doctors, coaches or players.

“Those people are there to coach or play and do their role, and everything else is done by us.”

Verhelst’s role begins long before match day, with the team Logistics Manager also responsible for loading the equipment truck and transporting the Swans property - including game balls and match guernseys - to the ground at both home and away matches.

Verhelst is also the last to leave after the match, when he and a number of Swans volunteers load the truck and return all the team equipment back to the club.

“I’m one of the last blokes here at the end of the night, but we’ve got a good base of volunteers here who also help out, which is really important to the club,” he said.

“We’re the last guys here packing up the van and making sure everything is sweet come the end of the night.”
