Sydney Swans midfielder Matty Roberts will make his debut against Richmond this Friday night in Marn Grook at the SCG.

Senior Coach John Longmire confirmed at a team meeting this week that the 18 year old from South Australia will feature in Round 11.

“One of the really key things for anyone is the cycle of improvement of trying to listen, learn and go out and do, and that’s all we can ask of anyone, of any age,” Longmire said to the team.

“It’s really important when you are a young player to go out and do that.

“We feel like we have been able to do that with a number of players over a number of years and I think a really good example of that for this week is a player that is going to make his debut for this footy club: Matty Roberts.”

Roberts was selected with pick 34 in the 2021 AFL Draft.

A hard-working midfielder with an ability to play forward, Roberts is known for his quality football IQ and having a keen eye for goal. He has impressed with strong performances in the VFL competition this season.

Consistently hitting the scoreboard with his accurate left boot, he has demonstrated a hard-work ethic and competitive nature, while also proving to be tough in the contest with an ability to play outside.

Before signing with the Swans, Roberts played with South Adelaide in the SANFL and represented South Australia at consecutive Under 16 national Championships.

The Sydney Swans take on Richmond at Marn Grook at the SCG on Friday night at 7:50pm.
