Sydney Swans champion Dane Rampe has announced his retirement from the AFL.

This brings the curtain down on an extraordinary 14-season career that saw him become one of the most respected and decorated players in the Club's history.

Drafted with pick 37 in the 2012 Rookie Draft, Rampe made his AFL debut in Round 1, 2013 and would go on to play 289 games in the red and white, the seventh-most by any player in South Melbourne/Sydney Swans history.

He established himself as one of the competition's premier defenders, earning All-Australian honours in 2016 and winning Sydney’s Bob Skilton Medal in 2019.

Rampe served as the Swans' co-captain from 2019 to 2023 and returned as stand-in captain for the remainder of the 2026 finals series after captain Callum Mills suffered an ACL injury.

The 36-year-old’s 25th final, played in this year’s Preliminary Final, cemented his place among the club’s all-time greats, ranking fourth for finals appearances in South Melbourne/Sydney Swans history. He only trails club legends Adam Goodes (28), Jarrad McVeigh (28), and Jude Bolton (26).

I hope I did you, and the jumper, proud.

Rampe said he has had an incredible journey at the Swans.

“I grew up dreaming of wearing the red and white,” Rampe said

“The Sydney Swans felt like home long before I ever walked through the door, and to have not only played for this club, but to have led it, has been perhaps the greatest privilege of my life.

“This has been an incredibly hard decision to make. I have given every part of my heart and soul to this place, and as much as I wish it were otherwise, I simply have nothing left to give. I share this not from a place of exhaustion or defeat, but from one of overwhelming pride and gratitude.

“I have been afforded far more from my career than I ever could have imagined. The experiences, the lessons and the growth that came from the incredible highs and devastating lows transcend football, and I will carry them with me for the rest of my life. I would not change a thing.

“Ultimately, it is the people and the relationships I have forged that I cherish the most. These connections are without doubt my most meaningful achievements. In the coming months, I look forward to thanking the players, coaches, staff and fans in the way each of them truly deserves.

"To the South Melbourne and Sydney Swans family, thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing this journey with me. I hope I did you, and the jumper, proud.”

“His versatility meant he always took on the opposition’s best. In every one of his 289 games, he played within 30 metres of the opposition’s goal, his mental resilience was incredible.

“Ramp’s talk and instruction set up the ground better than anyone’s, it gave his teammates confidence, and he led the way for the teams he played in to be hard to play against.

“His elite training standards, his leadership and his empathy on and off the field showed others the way. He inspired and taught a generation of Swans players how to be a Blood.

“I never coached a more athletic, fiercely competitive, personable, empathetic or quality human than Dane Rampe. What a privilege, and what an absolute champion.”
