Sydney Swans leadership group member, Lisa Steane is the first Swan to pick up votes in the AFL Coaches Association AFLW Champion Player of the Year.

In her 20th AFLW appearance Steane picked up two votes for her performance in Sydney's inaugural AFLW match against St Kilda at North Sydney Oval on Saturday.

As one of the few players in the Swans side who had previous AFLW experience, Steane was crucial and hard at every contest and picked up 14 disposals.

The Swans were valiant in defeat in their AFLW opener, the Saints prevailing by 29 points but the home side showed plenty of promise for their first outing in the competition.
