ROUND ONE

There were plenty of movement for the Sydney Swans on the first night of the 2022 NAB AFL Draft, which saw the club make back-to-back bids and eventually trade with Hawthorn.

The Swans went into the Draft with picks 14, 17, 42, 69 & 80, and spoke of their open-minded approach to this year's class and were eager to test their options.

Changes amongst the previous draft selections with other clubs meant the Swans were on the clock at pick 16, which was used to bid on GWS Academy product Harry Rowston, which saw the Giants oblige and recruit the Griffith teenager.

The Swans then used pick No.17 to bid on Adelaide father-son defender Max Michalanney – the son of Norwood great Jim Michalanney – where the Crows also quickly matched.

Rather than use pick No.18, the Swans traded it to the Hawks, sliding to pick No.27 and receiving future second- and third-round selections as part of the deal.

The Swans eventually drafted Jacob Konstanty from Gippsland Power with pick 20.

"It was probably as we predicted and we knew there was going to be a bit happening," said National Recruiting Manager Simon Dalrymple.

"We were really well prepared through Chris Keane, who did a lot of the preparation work in terms of scenarios and trades on the run."

ROUNDS TWO & THREE

The Sydney Swans are excited by the prospects of their two new draftees having recruited Cooper Vickery and Caleb Mitchell with picks 27 and 40 of the 2022 NAB AFL Draft.

The duo round out another successful recruitment drive by the club following the acquisition of Jacob Konstanty with pick 20 in Round One.

Vickery is a versatile defender who is able to play on the wing, and has shown a huge dedication to earn his spot on a senior list within the last 12 months

"People say Cooper is a bolter, but not on our list," General Manager of List Strategy and Recruitment Kinnear Beatson said.

"He's a small defender...and his commitment to train with Warragul has been significant given the distance has had to travel.

"We just think we have been looking for a small defender that can play on the likes of Kysiah Pickett, Charlie Cameron and Cody Weightman.

"They're the ones that get under your skin and are hard to match up on. We think he has the potential to be able to do that."

Meanwhile, Caleb Mitchell is a hard-running midfielder who will bolster the wing stocks of the Swans.

"We had Caleb rated a lot higher. His history is really interesting - at the start of the year he wasn't even on the radar of the Murray Bushrangers but he went to his coach and said 'I want to try and play AFL footy'," he said.

"He got himself super fit, got his 2km time trial down, shed a lot of weight and ended up playing for Vic Country. He's one of those guys who can get up and back on the wing - those guys who can compete in the air, and play that role, are invaluable."

The club passed on their remaining picks of 62 and 75.
