Sydney Swans co-captain Dane Rampe has signed a two-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until at least the end of 2025.

The 33-year-old defender has played 221 games in the red and white since being taken at pick 37 in the 2013 AFL rookie draft.

Rampe’s career to date has been a story of perseverance and hard work. Having initially been overlooked for several national drafts, he had stints with Williamstown in the VFL and then UNSW-Eastern Suburbs Bulldogs in the Sydney AFL. It was there that he won the Phelan Medal for best player in the league in 2012, which led to his rookie selection with the Swans as a mature age pick.

Since his debut in Round 1, 2013 Rampe has never looked back, having won the AFLPA’s Robert Rose award for most courageous player in 2020, Bob Skilton Medal as Sydney Swans best and fairest in 2019, and a member of the AFL All Australian Team in 2016. He has also led the Swans as co-captain since 2019.

Sydney Swans Executive General Manager – Football, Charlie Gardiner, said the club is thrilled to have Rampe sign on.

“Dane continues to be a very important member of our squad.  He has shown remarkable consistency and durability throughout his career and continues to perform at a very high level,” Gardiner said.

“While Dane will continue to be an important member of our defensive unit, he is also an instrumental leader away from it. He is an outstanding leader, holds great relationships across our football program and provides invaluable support for John and our coaching team.

Rampe said he was pleased to continue his career in his beloved red and white.

“I love the place, I’m really excited about the group, and where it’s at. Obviously, we nearly reached the summit last year and feel as though there’s some unfinished business.

“Being able to have Horse as coach for such a long period of time is huge, he’s a great mentor along with Jarrad McVeigh and Josh Kennedy as both captains I’ve played under and with, and they’ve really moulded me as a person and a leader,” Rampe said.
