The QBE Sydney Swans Academy was established in 2010 to provide a junior development program for young budding athletes aged 11 to 19 in NSW.

Amy Hardman and her son Ned have been involved with the Academy for six years, after finding a passion for the sport through Auskick.

Ned currently trains in the U16 program with skills and strength sessions held at the new Sydney Swans facility twice a week. AFL is not offered at his school, and Ned is often forced to balance commitments.

According to Amy, Ned is not bothered by the sacrifice and is thrilled to be around like-minded boys.

“It’s so amazing to be part of something bigger,” Amy told Sydney Swans Media.

Alongside weekly training which takes place in the new facilities at Sydney Swans HQ, Ned has been fortunate to play weekend matches for the Academy, experiencing what’s involved to be a professional athlete.

“He loves his coaches, and he looks up to all the people that are involved,” she added. “He’s always wanted to play AFL professionally and this year has taken that to another level.”

Despite their lengthy tenure with the Sydney Swans, the impact on Ned – both in skill and demeanour – has not been lost on the family. Thanks to the supportive Academy staff (an aspect Amy emphasised in her praise of the Club); Ned’s development extends past just skill.

“Ned has definitely matured,” she explained.

“He’s always had a bit of confidence, but he’s got even more from his coaches and peers.

“What the kids get to learn – skills, playing, confidence, nutrition – it’s an unbelievable opportunity.”

Ned echoed this notion to Sydney Swans Media, adding “it’s better than training anywhere else.”

He continued, “Obviously my skills have increased but the most improvement has been my knowledge of the game.”

The Academy is supported by principal partner QBE and receives additional funding from the Sydney Swans Foundation. The Foundation exists to help the club succeed, now and into the future. This is made possible thanks to our generous donors.

The Sydney Swans Foundation is this week’s match day partner, and we ask you to support the cause in Round 22.
