The Sydney Swans have started their 2023 AFLW campaign with a seven-point victory over the Gold Coast Suns, showing huge improvement from their first year in the competition.

A blistering opening quarter was the catalyst of the 5.10 (40) to 7.5 (47) win, with four unanswered goals igniting a strong display from start to finish

Sofia Hurley shined with plenty of classy touches, while reigning Club Champion Cynthia Hamilton also starred with her customary tackle pressure and tough ball-winning ability.

New co-captains Lucy McEvoy and Chloe Molloy also showed glimpses of their best, while their leadership had a huge impact in the second half.

Molloy also got her name on the scoresheet with a goal in the third quarter.

Sydney Swans Assistant Coach Nick Davis said the coaching staff were impressed with the playing groups ability to adapt to different game plans, while also being rewarded for the little efforts that ultimately paved the way for victory.

"There is always a bit of an unknown when you come into pre-season after you have played match simulation and just played against each other," Davis said.

"It's always good to test it against a good opposition and we were able to implement everything we wanted to do.

"There is plenty to work on, but a really good start."

Ally Morphett also reaped the rewards of a strong pre-season with a hard-working performance in the ruck, while Rebecca Privitelli (two goals) and Aliesha Newman impressed with their forward craft.

Defenders Brenna Tarrant, Bella Smith and Ella Heads also proved strong down back - ensuring the Suns would kick just one goal for the entire first half.

While Davis said the win was a step in the right direction, he insisted the players will be filled with a wealth of confidence for the start of the new season.

"I think the girls can walk away with the confidence in the game plan and the systems we have put in place, but I think more importantly they can enjoy playing footy together and know they will get better.

"It's a step in the right direction and the players can take plenty out of their performance."

The Swans will now move their focus towards their pre-season match against Carlton at the SCG, with members and fans encouraged to show their support with free entry to the match.
