Sydney Swans midfielder Molly Thomas has plenty of support in her corner.

As she prepares for her first season in the AFLW competition, the importance and meaning behind the year ahead is not lost on the 19-year-old.

Selected with the 47th pick of the 2025 AFLW Draft, Thomas joined the senior squad after spending four years with the QBE Sydney Swans Academy. 

Hailing from Singleton, NSW, Thomas was part of the Top-End Program, which comprised the best Under 18 AFLW talent in New South Wales.

A smart left-footer, with a great balance of offensive and defensive impact, Thomas brings clean hands, damaging kicking and the ability to compete overhead. 

And in an intimate and special evening, Molly sat down with her mother Lisa at the 2026 AFLW Guernsey Presentation last week to reflect on her journey to date.

“I'm just so incredibly honoured and proud to represent my hometown, but also my club, to show the people who have supported me along the way, to show them what I can do,” Thomas said.

“But to also represent my loved ones who sadly passed away in the bus accident not that long ago, just a couple of years ago, to show them and make them proud.”

It is an incredibly moving and powerful force behind the new Swan. 

Thomas, who played her junior football with the Singleton Roosters, was deeply impacted when the club was tragically impacted in 2023, when five of its members were lost in a Hunter Valley bus crash.

The accident claimed the lives of 10 people on their way back from a wedding; with half of the victims having played for the Singleton Roosters Football Club. 

Receiving her guernsey last week at the 2026 AFLW Guernsey Presentation night, Thomas reflected on achieving one step in her dream.

“I think it’s just so special because this is my dream,” Thomas said.

“So I get to pursue my dream and put on the red and white guernsey that I've always dreamed to play in and be with people who I thought were so famous. Now I get to be alongside them playing on the field.”

It’s a journey that started long ago for the Thomas family. 

Molly’s mother, Lisa, reflected on her journey from she first started playing football and the special connection to the Singleton Roosters which sparked it all. 

“It was the Paul Kelly Cup. Molly’s year five teacher introduced a bunch of girls to AFL and they all just fell in love with the agility and the physicality of it, and they ended up winning the competition,” she said.

“This small town group of girls from Singleton just went on and showed all these city kids all this toughness and amazing athleticism!

“So it was there from the start. The journey and the love was there from the beginning.”

While the depth of the bond and connection to the community was hard for Lisa to put into words, the tragedy and loss has made the Thomas family stronger. Lisa said receiving the guernsey stood as a symbol of Thomas’ hard work, resilience and the sacrifices along the way.

A symbol of the countless hours her family and friends drove to Sydney once or twice a week for training with the QBE Sydney Swans Academy.

A symbol for her mentor and coach, the late Nadine McBride, who was her biggest supporter. 

And a symbol for every country kid who hails from a small town playing local footy and dreams of playing in the AFLW.

“There are a lot of ups and downs but we eat resilience for breakfast. The amount of loss and tragedy that has come our way, it helps you move forward to really pursue your teams and make every moment count,” Lisa said.

“The guernsey represents all of Molly’s hard work, dedication, talent and athleticism. But then as a whole it also represents all those people standing behind her and that supported her - like a beloved Roosterette, so it means the world. 

“I’ve always told Molly how I’ve felt so she knows how I feel,” Lisa added.

“But we are just, as a community, so proud of Molly.

“Her hard work, her resilience, her dedication. Finishing her HSC, working 20 hours a week and travelling the amount you do is no mean feat and we just think you're amazing and are so proud of you.”

The Sydney Swans kick off their AFLW season this weekend, with a Round One clash with Adelaide at Unley Oval, Melbourne.
