Four quarters of consistent football is what Swans big man Mike Pyke is aiming for this season.
Following a number of games where the ruckman impressed for a half or three quarters, last weekend’s clash with the Brisbane Lions was Pyke’s standout performance for the season, with the Canadian contributing evenly across four quarters to be named in the Swans’ best.
Pyke said that consistent football was what both he and the team had been focused on.
“For me, it’s been a matter of putting four quarters together, and I think I’ve had for the last four or five weeks probably three quite good quarters and then one has let me down,” Pyke told sydneyswans.com.au.
“It was good to string together four quarters on the weekend and also just good from a team aspect to get a good win against the Brisbane reserves who are quite a good team.
“It was good for all of us to get some confidence that way.
“(Winning two in a row) is a really good sign, and I think it’s just indicative of the fact that not only myself, but most guys haven’t put those four quarters togethers, so it was good on a team front.”
Pyke’s improvement has come after a series of injuries, including a posterior cruciate ligament tear in round two this season and an on-going quad injury last season.
The ruckman said he feels confident in his body now after the frustration of being on the sidelines.
“It was a torn posterior cruciate injury, so essentially it causes you to be a little bit unstable at times but fortunately we were able to get on it pretty quickly and I’ve been playing in the reserves for the last four or five weeks,” he said.
“The quad is also perfectly fine now, it’s repaired, but I’m not used to having that many injuries so it’s been a bit difficult working through them, but that’s the reality of professional sport.”
Now playing with a full bill of health, Pyke has his sights set on pressing for senior selection in 2012.
“I don’t think I’m too far off, but it’s not up to what I think, it’s up to the coaches,” he said.
“I think (senior selection) is something you try not to worry about, but it’s obviously always in the back of your mind if you think you’re a senior player that you want to be playing senior football.
“Hopefully they can find a place for me sooner rather than later, but if not, I’ll just continue to work on my form in the reserves and press for a spot that way.”
The ruckman played two senior games last season, including an impressive performance against the Western Bulldogs in round seven where he kicked two goals for the Swans.
Pyke has continued to improve his work up forward this season, but said his main focus remains in the ruck.
“I personally think I can become a good forward player.
“It’s one of those positions that sort of takes time to develop in terms of reading the play, but I do feel relatively confident there.
“It’s a matter of getting opportunities, but at the moment with Shane (Mumford) out, our ruck stocks aren’t as strong as they would be with him in so you really take an opportunity wherever you can.
“I think I’ve made my career as a ruckman so far, so I’m certainly not turning my back on that role,” Pyke said.
