Lucy McEvoy has become ingrained in the identity and lifeblood of the Sydney Swans AFLW team. Since joining the Swans back in 2023, McEvoy has been involved in multiple major milestones in the red and white, including the club's first regular season and finals victory.

McEvoy has recently signed a new five-year contract, taking her through to the end of 2031, and speaking on the More than Footy podcast, presented by Bing Lee, the club captain said she is excited to reach more milestones and make more memories with the club she has come to love, both on and off the field.  

“It was a bit of a no-brainer, to be fair, like since coming to the Swans, it's been such a great environment to be a part of, and it was a really simple decision,” McEvoy said.

“A big part of it is the people around the club and not just like in the W program, but the club more broadly.”

“[From the] media team, commercial department, everyone is so welcoming, and you walk through the corridors and can have a chat with anyone.”

The Sydney Swans left a lasting impression on McEvoy well before she signed on with the club. Noting that the strong nature of the AFLW side has been present since season one, and now entering season number six, McEvoy wants to continue to lead the Swans' strong culture for the next generation. 

“I actually remember I did the boundary commentary [for Fox Footy] down in Geelong, Swans girls, we played Geelong in Geelong…and it was a pretty decent loss,” McEvoy said.

“But I just remember admiring the way that the Swans girls at that time had gone about it, and how they went about their business on the day, to lose by such a margin, but I think just having so much integrity in the way you go about how you lose says a lot.

“So when I did come up and you kind of get an understanding of how the club operates and what the club stands for, it was kind of like, okay, that's not a once-off moment, it's quite consistent in the day-to-day activities that happen around the place.

“That was a bit of the drawcard for me: just how you lose says a lot about what you stand for and what you want to be as a football club."

The two most memorable moments McEvoy has experienced in the red and white were being a part of the first-ever win in September of 2023 against the Giants, and the first finals wins that same season against the Suns. McEvoy describes those two moments as the closest she has felt to winning a premiership, an achievement the 25-year-old is hoping to achieve one day with the Swans.

“The first win at North Sydney, that was just absolutely incredible and to see what it meant to so many other people around the club that had put so much into [the program,” McEvoy said.

"That first finals win was, almost like, for me, the peak that I've had in football; the feeling that you get is as close as you can to almost winning a Premiership. I imagine winning a Premiership; that's how it would feel."

Off the back of the new contract and a successful preseason, McEvoy is confident and ambition of what the new-look AFLW team can do heading into the new 2026 season. 

“We've got big expectations for ourselves. There's probably no shying away from that,” McEvoy added.

“We're quite bullish about what we think we can achieve this year and with a new coach…there's just a sense of freshness around the program at the moment, which I think is really exciting.”
