The QBE Sydney Swans Academy has appointed Shane McGahan as the U16 Top End Male Head Coach for 2024. McGahan was promoted to the position after serving as the U15 Coach in 2023 and assistant coach to the Top End program from 2018 to 2022.

Joining the Academy in 2015 McGahan brings nine years of experience to the position working across all age groups during his long tenure.

Speaking to Sydney Swans Media the new head coach says he feels privileged to be given the opportunity.

“It’s something I’ve aspired to do,” McGahan said.

“I’m passionate about the development of junior footy and being involved in the top end allows me to help kids follow their dreams.”

700 young athletes are currently enrolled across New South Wales. The top end Male Academy had another successful year in 2023 with six Swans selected to participate in the U18 Allies Squad, which went on to win the Championship for the first time.

Academy products Indhi Kirk and Caiden Cleary were also drafted to the Swans senior squad late in the year.

“The Academy gives young athletes grounding into the professionalism that’s required and assists with their development as footballers and people,” McGahan added.

McGahan joins U18 Male Head Coach Colin O’Riordan who was appointed the role last November.
