The Sydney Swans AFLW side are set to light up Henson Park once again as they get set for their first game of the season at the Marrickville ground this Sunday in another massive installment of the Sydney Derby against the GWS Giants.
Heading into this weekend’s fifth edition of the AFLW Sydney Derby, both the Swans and the Giants have won two games apiece in the young history of this growing rivalry. From the very first game at the SCG in 2022, to the first win in the program's history in 2023, the Sydney Derby has already produced season-defining moments for both teams.
Before one of these teams breaks the head-to-head series tie and once again claims bragging rights, look at the previous meeting between the Swans and the Giants and how each team has earned their two derby wins so far.
2022
Sydney Swans 18 – 65 GWS Giants – SCG
The first-ever meeting between the Swans and the Giants in the AFLW was set up as the biggest game in the young history of the newly formed Swans AFLW program. Hosted at the SCG for the very first time, it was the Giants who got off to a strong start, kicking three goals in the first term before Lexi Hamilton responded midway through the second quarter with her very first AFLW goal.
Despite the 47-point defeat, the afternoon was a resounding success for the club and the wider AFLW program, with over 4,233 people attending the first-ever meeting between the cross-town rivals.
2023
Sydney Swans 51 – 46 GWS Giants – North Sydney Oval
Entering year number two of the AFLW program, the red and white opened the new season against the Giants at North Sydney Oval in what turned out to be a historic day for the entire club, with the AFLW side recording their first-ever win.
Similarly, the Giants stormed out in front and entered the halftime stoppage with a 12-point lead. The Swans continued to trail as high as 25 points late on in the third quarter.
However, an amazing fourth-quarter turnaround, including goals from Rebecca Privitelli and Chloe Molloy, saw the Swans soar over the Giants and record an historic victory, coming home in the end by five points.
2024
Sydney Swans 43 – 40 GWS Giants – Henson Park
The Sydney Swans recorded back-to-back derby wins against the Giants in their 2024 meeting. Storming out to a commanding 19 to7 lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to goals from Sarah Grunden and Montana Ham.
The Giants were able to gain their way back into the contest and were just a point down heading into the final term. Though two quick goals from Cynthia Hamilton at the start of the fourth restored the Swans' grip on the game. Aimee Whelan secured the victory for the red and white and win number two over the Giants.
2025
Sydney Swans 42– 49 GWS Giants – Henson Park
The AFLW Sydney Derby reached new heights in last year’s encounter that was later recognised as the Sport NSW Event of the Year.
In front of a record crowd of 7,171, the fourth meeting between the Swans and the Giants was the closest and fiercest yet. The two sides traded the lead right throughout the Round 6 fixture. Zippy Fish made a scintillating start with a pair of goals and a hand in another as the Swans held the Giants at arm's length during a tense opening half.
Though Cynthia Hamilton's lone goal in the early stages of the fourth quarter was the Swans' only major of the second half. The Giants came home the stronger of the two sides, evening the all-time head-to-head to two apiece with a seven-point win.
With so much history already written and bragging rights on the line once again, Colin O’Riordan will enter his first AFLW Sydney Derby, hoping to claim a crucial victory for the red and white and move to 4-1 on the year.
