Sydney midfielder Ryan O’Keefe says the majority of AFL players are unclear on the league’s gambling regulations.
Sydney premiership midfielder Ryan O'Keefe believes the majority of AFL players are unclear on the league's gambling policy and do not know exactly what the regulations stipulate.O'Keefe, whose rookie-listed teammate Kieren Jack is under investigation for placing bets on AFL matches, told radio station SEN 1116 the league had neglected to properly educate players on the league's gambling rules."I thought that you couldn't bet on your own club, but I wasn't quite sure that you couldn't bet on any AFL," O'Keefe said on Wednesday morning. "I was a bit hazy about it all as well."We all get educated on the drug policy, the racial policy and all these other policies, and the AFL do really well [with them], but I don't think the gambling part … if you ask 90 per cent of players, they'll probably give you the same answer."Jack placed two bets last year, totalling no more than $10, on matches not involving the Swans.O'Keefe said the young midfielder had explained the situation to his teammates and has the full support of the Swans as he continues to be investigated by the league."With the betting thing, he came up to us and was honest with us and told us what he did. There were no secrets there and we stood right behind him," he said."Now, we just have to wait and see what the AFL does with the outcome. But we don't leave one of our mates on his own."The Swans bowed out of NAB Cup contention on the weekend, courtesy of a 27-point loss to the Bulldogs at Manuka Oval. The talented midfielder denied the Swans held little interest in the pre-season competition, but conceded their ultimate objective remains the season proper."A lot of our guys aren't ready and we don't want to push them. Our aim is the regular season," he said."We don't treat it with disrespect, but we are more focused on the regular season and getting our players right for that."I think (the NAB Cup) is good. You've been training for a few months, slogging it out in the heat, and you really enjoy having a game."The pre-season comp is always good, it's new and always exciting, so all players do enjoy it and want to play. It's just a fact that some guys aren't ready."O'Keefe said last year's narrow Grand Final defeat had left the players with additional motivation for this season and holds high hopes for 2007, thanks to a promising pre-season and the acquisition of an experienced ruckman."When you get so close, it probably does make you … not more hungry, but gives you a little more of a flame burning inside," he said."I think the boys have really attacked the pre-season and are really looking forward to it. Having 'Spida' (Everitt) come into the team gives us that added potency in the ruck, so I think the boys are really excited."'Spida' has been really good up there, he's been training really well and he really fits in. He should be playing this week and he's going to be exciting."
