The Sydney Swans have secured a 30-point victory over Essendon at the SCG on Saturday night, powering away in the second half to secure their third victory to start the season.

Senior coach John Longmire had plenty of praise for his side’s second half.

The Bombers came out firing as they looked to make a statement to start the game and Longmire said his side eventually settled with their turnover and transition game in full flow, eventually wearing down the Bombers before piling on late goals to stretch the margin.

"They clearly come out with an intent in the physical space, they talked about that during the week," Longmire said.

"They were very clear about the edge that they wanted to play with, so we knew that they'd be coming with that.

“We probably weren’t getting our numbers across to the contest as much in the first half and they are very good in a scramble.

“There were a different things we needed to get right, the contested footy and our pressure needed to ramp up a little bit in the second half and we did it and did it really well.”

Defender Harry Cunningham left the field early in the game, following a collision with Peter Wright. Longmire was unsure how long the defender might be sidelined for after a heavy hit, and noted it was disappointing to lose the experienced defender.

"I look at it from, obviously, our point of view, it's going be disappointing to lose Harry for a bit now," Longmire said.

"I'm not sure how long, but I'm disappointed in that."

The Swans midfield trio of Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and Errol Gulden continued their strong form to kick off their 2024 campaign.

Forward-turned-midfielder Heeney finished with a game high 32 disposals, eight clearances and a goal while Warner (28 touches, two goals) and Gulden (24 touches, two goals) also shone.

“Most of our midfielders were similar in the second half. We were able to come home really strong in the second half,” Longmire said.

“I thought Isaac was pretty good for most of the game. He was fierce in the contest, he was strong around the ball and his run was outstanding.

“He was pretty consistent throughout the four quarters, but probably got better in the second half.

“We talk about the contest and getting that right, particularly around our defence and usually offence flows from that,” Longmire added.

“It’s usually our workrate, and I thought our workrate in the second half was really strong all over the ground.”
