The Sydney Swans have kicked off the season with an impressive 7-1 record. Assistant coach Dean Cox says chemistry building between the young team has contributed to the club’s success as well, as a number stand out players.

Speaking in the latest Premiership Club update Cox praised Justin McInerney for his team-first approach.

“He is probably one that we’ve been really impressed with,” the coach told Sydney Swans Media.

“His ability to not only play multiple roles, whether it’s half-forward, on-ball, wing or half-back at times, but the real team-first approach.”

The versatile midfielder was drafted with pick 44 of the 2018 AFL Draft and went to make his debut in Round 4 of the 2019 season.

After eight rounds of the 2024 AFL season McInerney is averaging 21 disposals and six marks.

When we need to go to someone, he's been the person that we can turn to and get stuff done.

Looking ahead to the rest of the season Cox says there are a number of areas the squad is hoping to improve upon, particularly in the backline.

“We worked pretty hard after a few quiet weeks on our defensive shape and the transition,” he said.

“We need to make sure that we are a really tough team to score against.”

The Swans will travel to Western Australia in Round 9 for a Friday night clash with Fremantle before returning home for Marn Grook in Round 10.
