The South Melbourne and Sydney Swans family are saddened of the passing of past South Melbourne player, lifelong supporter and member Peter Rice, aged 87.
Peter played 39 games and kicked 6 goals for South Melbourne between 1959 and 1962, holding down roles as a dependable centre half-back and ruckman. Wearing the number 42 guernsey, Peter brought a quiet toughness and determination to every contest. In recent years, he held a soft spot for the current wearer of number 42, Robbie Fox, watching on proudly as the tradition continued.
But it was his enduring love for the club after his playing days that truly left a lasting legacy.
A regular fixture at Melbourne games and past player events both in Melbourne and Sydney, Peter’s presence was always felt — and always welcomed. With his trademark cheeky smile, quick wit, and walking stick in hand, he made his way into the Swans rooms more times than we could count. Even without a ticket, he would charm security staff, who came to know and greet him warmly: “Hello Mr Rice, come through. How many are you bringing with you today?”
Though he walked with a stick, Peter moved with surprising speed, often hard to keep up with and in true Peter fashion, he would gently tap the ankles of anyone in his way as he made a beeline for the changerooms after the game.
The Swans came to know Peter as much more than a past player, he was part of the club. Over the years he received heartfelt messages and gifts on birthdays and during times of illness, a testament to how deeply respected and loved he was.
Peter’s loyalty never wavered. Through wins, losses, and tough seasons, he never spoke a bad word about the team. His support for South Melbourne, and later the Sydney Swans, was unwavering.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife of over 64 years, Dlorah, his children Sue and Peter, and his adored grandchildren Caitlin, Gordon, Jacinta and Jake.
Thank you, Peter, for your service, your spirit, and your lifelong love of the red and white. You will be missed, but never forgotten.
