Sydney Swans utility Justin McInerney has turned his back on free agency to sign a five-year contract extension.

The long-term deal will see the fan-favourite remain in the Harbour City until at least the end of the 2031 season.

McInerney was initially drafted to Sydney with pick 44 in the 2018 National Draft and made his debut in Round 4 the following season.

Known for his speed and endurance, the 25-year-old has gone on to play 109 games in the red and white.

He won the club’s Most Improved Award in 2024 and continued to improve to finish in the top ten of the 2025 Bob Skilton Medal.

McInerney said he was thrilled to re-sign with the club.

“It means a lot to be able to extend my time here at the club and I feel like we are building something special,” McInerney said.

“I just love the club, it allows me to be who I am as a person, and I love the mates that I've made along the journey.

“I want to continue to play my role and play to my strengths as well, I think the boys have allowed me to do that and hopefully we can go forward and have a great year as a collective.”

Sydney Swans Executive General Manager AFL Football, Leon Cameron, said the club is excited to have McInerney commit long-term.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have signed Justin for another five years,” Cameron said.

“His decision to turn his back on free agency and commit to the club long-term is a great show of confidence in our program.

“Not only does Justin bring a lot of energy to the playing group and our fans, but his leadership and role is highly valued within our four walls.”
