Ahead of tomorrow night's clash with Brisbane, Sydney Swans utility Justin McInerney fronted the media at Captain's Run. He spoke about his own game in Opening Round, his contract extension, what he's expecting from the reigning premiers and more.

On his own performance against Carlton

"I think it would have been up there, it was obviously a great game. To see the work that we've put into pre-season come out to life was amazing, I think we obviously did a lot wrong in the first half but to see all the boys respond was great. It was up there, the crowd was here, it was great so I loved it."

On whether his recent contract extension helped him

"I guess it was a bit of weight off the shoulders but to be honest I didn't really think too much about it going forward. I left a lot to my manager Matt Bain and he seemed to do a pretty good job. I really didn't have much to do with it at all. He just came to me towards the end and said they've agreed to a deal so that was pretty much it. I didn't have much to do with it at all so it didn't really weigh too much on me."

On the challenge that Brisbane pose

"I think that was one of the better games. Obviously the years just started but that would be one of the best games of the year. I think they still did plenty right, they lost by a kick and they played some great footy. They've been a great team for so long. They've made three grand finals in a row and they're so well coached and well driven. We've obviously got our hands full this week and hopefully it's a good match up."

On whether its a good time to face them

"I'm not sure it's ever a good time to get them but I think if the same thing happened to us, you'd be encouraging the next man up. I'm sure they've got, I think Draper's back this week who's another great addition to them. They'll be great for sure."

On the Lions midfield

"They've (Brisbane) got one of the best midfields in the comp. Obviously you mentioned the first half against Carlton last week. They got us done in the contest and they were a lot better physically in the contest. We know that if we do that again this week the scoreboard probably won't be as kind. We've got to be on from the start and hopefully we can nullify a few of them."

On whether the team will try to replicate the game style that beat the Lions last year

"I think it's evolved a lot. I think we're a completely different team from last year and I assume they've changed a lot up as well so they'll be different as well. We've taken a bit of confidence out of the fact that last year we could have matched it with them and they went on to win the number one prize so hopefully we can go well this week."

On whether the extra attention on Sydney's star players gives him more space

"I think we've got a lot of great players and it's a privilege to play alongside a lot of them but I think I just try and play my role and hopefully that I can get a bit of a lick of the ice cream off the back of that but it's just so great to be able to play with players like that and add Nick Blakey into that as well. Tom Papley and Charlie Curnow, there's so many good players out in the park so it's great to be a part of. I guess you can look at it a bit that way that they're going to put so much work into Isaac obviously, Errol and Chad so hopefully you can get a bit off the chain but not necessarily. I think you have the same focus going in every week to just play your role and hopefully the team can benefit off the back of that."

On Charlie Curnow

"Charlie's been great since the first time that he came to the club. He's fitting so well off the field and obviously on the field, it's going to take a few games to get to know the way he runs and plays but he's been great, he's fitting seamlessly and it's so good to have him."

On what is expected of Charlie on Saturday night

"Well, we can just expect from Charlie what hopefully we can get for the rest of the year. I assume they're going to have a plan for all our forwards. They've got a great system back there. I'm sure the personnel is not going to damage them too much. They're going to be ready to go so hopefully Charlie can just do what he's always done, compete and bring the ball to the ground."
