Sydney have made two changes to the lineup for Round 2 which sees the Swans head south for Thursday night footy against Hawthorn at the MCG.

Senior Coach Dean Cox has called Caiden Cleary and Corey Warner into the side after a double injury blow coming out of Sydney's win over Brisbane last weekend at the SCG.

Cleary and Warner come into the side for Errol Gulden (shoulder) and Isaac Heeney (hamstring) with Gulden ruled out for the next four months, requiring surgery on his shoulder, while the club is taking a cautious approach with Heeney.

Senior Coach Dean Cox said the club weren't going to take the risk with Heeney.

“Isaac was really close (to playing) but the five day break didn’t help," Cox said.

From here it’s about managing the best thing for Isaac and the football team in the short term and that’s about making sure he is right post bye.

"Despite the Heeney / Gulden double blow, Cox is looking forward to the inclusion of Cleary and Warner who will come in and play their role for the side.

"We aren’t expecting them to come in and fill the void like Isaac or Errol," Cox said.

"One thing we want to make sure is that we are a system based team and role focused team. They understand the role they need to play and hopefully they perform really well."

Hawthorn v Sydney Swans

Round 2

MCG, Melbourne • VIC

The Swans head to MCG for the first time for Round 2 and are looking forward to seeing plenty of red and white.

Nick Blakey was on SEN on Tuesday as part of Sydney Swans Membership Day and spoke to the team's feelings of playing at the MCG, something the club has only a couple of times in the regular season in 2026.

"Anytime we get to play at the G, we love it," Blakey said.

"You grow up watching the game and the biggest games are at the G. We don't get play there a whole heap, so to get there this week, early in our season and have a run around and play in front of our South Melbourne based fans is something we look forward to.

Whenever you get to run out on the G it's not something we take for granted that's for sure."

Cox echoed Blakey's sentiments saying that the playing group love playing in Melbourne and are aware of the support in the Bloods heartland.

"We are lucky enough to have a heap of support in Sydney and then wherever we travel around Australia as well and we can’t wait to see them tomorrow night at the MCG."

Ball up at the MCG on Thursday night is 7.30pm AEDT, live on Fox Footy, Channel 7 and KAYO.
