Jake Lloyd will move to the top of the Swans Sydney Derby games list at the SCG on Friday night and is poised to become the #1 ball-winner in Derby history. Lloyd, who debuted in the first derby in Round 1 2012, will play his 26th game against the GWS Giants to move one ahead of ex-captain Luke Parker. He currently sits only 24 possessions away from the all-derby possession record held by ex-GWS captain Callan Ward (625).

The Swans, who won five derbies in a row from Round 20 2023, will take a 20-11 head-to-head record against the Giants into derby #32 despite a 44-point loss in their last meeting at the Sydney Showgrounds in Round 20 last year. It’s 3-1 to the Giants in finals between the clubs.

Oddly, the Sydney derby has been played at six different venues across four states. In Sydney it’s 9-5 to the Swans at the SCG, 5-4 to the Swans at Sydney Showgrounds and 4-1 to the Swans at Stadium Australia. Three Sydney derbies have been played interstate due to Covid – the Swans won at Perth Stadium in 2020 and at Carrara in 2021, and the Giants won in a final at Launceston in 2021.

Charlie Curnow, Malcolm Rosas Jr and Jai Serong will make their derby debut as the Swans, sitting on top of the 2026 AFL ladder with a 4-1 record and a percentage of 175.5, host the 12th-placed Giants.

The Swans, 9-5 in derbies at the SCG after winning the last three at ‘home’, find themselves in a rare position of ranking #1 in the League for points for and points against after last Saturday’s 32-point Gather Round win over Gold Coast at Norwood.

Averaging 116.2 points for, they lead Gold Coast (108.2) and Hawthorn (107.0) offensively. And conceding 66.2 points per game, they head Fremantle (67.6) and Collingwood (75.4) defensively.

And for the trivia buffs, who are the two players to have worn the colours of both clubs in a derby?

Shane Mumford, a premiership Swan in 2012, played 79 games in red and white from 2010-13 before 116 Giants games from 2014-21. And Taylor Adams, currently in hamstring rehabilitation, played 31 Giants games from 2012-13, and has added 23 Swans games in 2024-25 after 10 years at Collingwood.
