On the win over the Saints
"Those games are special. We remember them in years to come. I'm so proud of the boys. We spoke about what we needed to do in that situation during the week, and it's actually funny how when we get to the game, we needed it, and everyone knew what to do. I was so proud of the boys, and everyone knew their role at that time, and it was the calm and composure to just be able to execute that. We spoke about how good Saints were going to be and how tough they were, and Ross is as a coach, and how tough he coaches his teams. That was going to take to the very last minute, and it sure did."
On belief they find a way to win
"Yeah, I think it's important you start to build some confidence and belief that we can win any stage of the game. We're obviously not playing our best footy or complete games at the moment, but it's important to just keep stringing them together and find ways to win. The team's obviously going to start to defend the corridor a bit more on us, and we're just going to play what they give us and find multiple ways to win, and we were able to do that."
On the match winning moment
"I wouldn't say it was a set play, but we talked about things that we'd change with stoppage positionally and roles when we needed to kick a goal. We spoke about a few things that we needed to do, and it was just funny that a couple of days later that was exactly what we needed and it worked perfectly. Full credit to the coaches and the prep that they've been doing."
On being back playing this season
"I've loved it. It's a lot easier being on the field than watching. Coxy's been great, as well as Jeremy Laidler, my forwards coach, for just being patient with me and not putting any pressure on me to come back and dominate, just letting me build into the year. I think I probably started the season a bit slowly, and they were just being patient with me and put a lot of trust and confidence in me to find my way again.I think I've tried to just contribute a bit more over the last few weeks and play my role and starting to feel a bit more comfortable again and being able to back up week to week. It obviously helps when we're winning. I couldn't be any happier to be back out there and just loving it."
On how he's feeling heading into the bye next week
"To be honest, I've missed enough games last year, so I'm happy for the games to just keep on coming. I'm absolutely loving just backing up week after week and being out in the park during the training week and just having a laugh. It's the best time of year, so I'm just slogging it out on the track and on game day trying to get wins."
On spending time on the wing
"Yeah, I think obviously we had a few injuries on the weekend, so we had to swing a few changes and a bit of personnel, and it's something that's sort of spoken about me doing over the last six months at times. I have spent little snippets over there of my career here and there on the wing, but it was probably the first full-blown crack I had at it. And yeah, it was nice. Obviously, it helps that we won and I was able to get a little bit of the ball, but yeah, I think I'll just do whatever the coaches need. Obviously, we pride ourselves, we've got a lot of boys that can be very versatile, both ends of the ground or on ball, and yeah, I'll just go. It's up to the coaches to decide where they think that I can best help the team, and I'm happy to do that."
On the work he does on his marking
"Yeah, I try. Every training session, I pretty much work on it. I think it's probably the most important thing for modern-day key forwards is their contests, and I've got two of the best at the club in Joel and Charlie, and then as well going against Tommy Mac, who's so good out at the other end of the ground. So flogging myself against them at training is only going to make me better, and sort of starting to see a bit of results now. So just keep working on it, and I know that it'll sort of just keep getting better and better on week and week."
On Tom McCartin
"He's one of my good mates, so it was a shame to see him go down. He's obviously such an important player for our team, and he's had a little bit of history with head knocks, but yeah, he's in great spirits, like you said. He's okay. He's just a bit annoyed. He's obviously having such a great year, and we're going to miss him dearly, but the most important thing is his health, and we just want to make sure that he's feeling good."
On how the team can improve
"Yeah, I think full credit to Saints. They were really good throughout a tough opposition. They didn't allow us to play the way we wanted to play for the majority of the day, but yeah, (6:18) just sort of taking what opposition give us. I think a lot has been spoken about our handball game through the corridor, and I'm sort of a bit sick of hearing that, but yeah, we're a multifaceted side, so just sort of not trying to jam the ball in there all the time. Just take what they give us and march the ball up. Yeah, just don't shoot ourselves in the foot in a sense of gifting opposition goals. Yeah, just stay in games and get back to our contests and deep entries. I think when we did that, we sort of tried to score pretty heavily, and we were able to lock the ball in our front half."
On Will Edwards
"Yeah, it's awesome. I think I actually played with him in my first year at Southport, and he was a VFL top-up player, and he was playing full forward, just helping out. We were a few short, and the size of him then, the specimen, and he's come on so much. But you've always been able to see over the last few years the potential that he's had. He's such a beast. He's so strong and big and fast, and he's the nicest fellow as well. He works so hard at his craft, and he's just fitted in seamlessly. The combination he's been able to build with Tommy and help each other out, and the way he's been able to influence games in such his young career is exciting, and I think he's got a really promising future for the club."
On his role in the forward line
Yeah, definitely. Like I said, whatever Coxey and Leon think what's best for the side, I want to do that to help. Obviously, things happen, injuries happen all the time, and the team's changing from week to week. So what my role is, I'm not sure what that is going forward, but Hayden's been playing some really good footy in the VFL and the last two weeks in the AFL, and Joel is having a career year, and Charlie's been awesome as well. So yeah, I'm not sure what that looks like for me, but yeah, just happy to be involved in wins."
On whether he has changed his goal kicking routine
"I think goal-kicking's always been one of my great strengths. I think probably the last two years ago, I probably lost my ways a bit and lost my confidence with it, and you sort of think about it a lot and put more pressure on yourself, and it sort of snowballs and gets worse and worse and worse. I just wanted to get back to that. I haven't changed anything in my routine. It's still the same as it was when I first got drafted. We do a lot of reps with it with Jeremy, and I think goal-kicking's very important. It keeps you in game sometimes when you're not playing well, so you get a lot of good kicks in it. You've got to kick your goals. I think bad kicking's bad football, so it's a pretty important part of the game."
On Errol Gulden
"Yeah, he's full training at the moment. He's just getting a case in his legs. I don't know if I'm allowed to say this, but I think he'll be back in a week or so. He'll be a nice injection for our team. Obviously we know the quality of a player he is, but he's not going to be our saviour. He's just going to come in and play his role. He's a really good leader for us as well, so he's going to do that. I can't wait to get back out on the field with him."
On Isaac Heeney
"Yeah, we had a group chat with a few boys after the game texting about Isaac. He was tagged the whole game. He still had thirty (disposals) and two (goals) and was the main part of the goal at the end of the game. He just gets better and better week on week and I think he's clearly the best player in the game. Not just what he can do offensively, but continuously week on week. His impact defensively side of the ball. I think no player is as good as him on both sides of the ball. I don't see a weakness in his game. He's too fit, fast, strong, powerful and he can do it all. I love watching him every week and drags over the line constantly."
