Sydney Swans co-captain Luke Parker and his partner Kate Lawrence are committed to giving back to the local community this Christmas, using their renovation skills to make over the Ronald McDonald House in Randwick.

Parker and Lawrence are aiming to raise $40,000 to support the renovations of the reception and laundry area at the house, which provides assistance to seriously ill children and their families.

“It’s a great opportunity to be able to do something like this," Parker said.

"When Kate came to me with the opportunity, I was really excited about it, especially after meeting the families and kids.

“We just want to really turn it into more of a home for people in need. The amount of time they spend here is huge. We want it to be a place that feels like home; we don’t want it to be like a place you go to for months or years and it feels like you’re going into a doctors office every day.”

With around 838 families staying each year, the need to support the house and services has been ever-growing, and the reception area is the first thing they see when they step into the house, while the laundy is in urgent need of an upgrade.

“We are going to be doing two key spaces," Lawrence said.

"The first part, the entry, is the main part of the house when people first enter and it’s very cold at the moment. We want to add some warmth to that and make it feel like you’re walking into a home.

“The second space is the laundry. It’s so crucial to them at the moment. They are currently paying to use the machines. That’s just how old they are, so we are going to update them.”

The Swans, Ronald McDonald House Charities, the children and their families and, of course, Parker and Lawrence, will highly appreciate donations to the project made by Sydney fans.
