Hannebery made his debut in 2009 and has been a consistent performer for the Swans this year.

Hannebery had the honour of being nominated for the prestigious Rising Star Award after his Round Two game against the Crows in Adelaide, when he had 23 disposals and laid four tackles.

He was also a standout in the Round Four game against North Melbourne, and has booted nine goals for the Swans in 2010.

His best haul was three goals against the Hawks during the Round 10 clash. But when told the result of the poll, Hannebery was surprised the fans had picked him.

“I’m a bit surprised really because there are a lot of players in the team that have stepped up from the last few years. That’s probably why we’re sitting where we are at the moment and looming as a possible finals contender,” Hannebery said.

Hannebery, 19, played seven senior games last season even though he was still living in Melbourne and doing Year 12 at Xavier College.

He re-located to Sydney after his final exams and has thrived in the club atmosphere. “The big difference this year has been moving up to Sydney full-time. Being around all the senior players, having the coaches give me feedback, constantly trying to set my week and having a clear plan has really set me apart from last year,’’ he said.

“The culture that we have here at the Swans is a really good one and it’s just good to be around the guys and train with them.”

With the Swans looking to cement their spot in the eight in the remaining rounds, Hannebery has set some personal goals to keep him focused on the road ahead.

“I’m looking forward to chipping away at some things like my decision making and knowing when to go and not to go, also the defensive side of my game and stopping players that are key to the other team.”
