Imagine if the Swans honoured places and events as well as people.

If the famous jumpers, the lockers of champions, the grandstands from which the Swans history was witnessed during the past 137 years could be named and remembered forever, as well as the legendary players and coaches.

That grand idea is set to become a reality for the first time at any AFL Club, with Swans chairman Richard Colless outlining an innovative scheme to create a “Swans heritage list’’.

Colless says when it comes to the nation’s heritage list, officially it can include “all things that make up Australia’s identity - our spirit and ingenuity, our historic buildings, and our unique, living landscapes … the stories and places we pass on to future generations’’, according to the Government’s website.

Australia’s heritage list includes natural wonders, buildings, rare documents, art work and cultural icons.

“But you could easily substitute ‘Swans’ for ‘Australia’, as we reflect on our Club’s extraordinary history from its formation in 1874,’’ Colless says.

The club is set to unveil the first inclusions on the Swans heritage list at the Hall of Fame dinner to be held on Saturday April 30, at the Bayside Grand Hall, Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Everything associated with the Club from 1874 on will be eligible for inclusion on the Swans Heritage List, apart from individuals, as they are recognised in the Hall of Fame.

Twenty three players were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the inaugural event in 2009, including Bloods Legends Bob Pratt, Bob Skilton and Paul Kelly, and a significant number of players and coaches are set to be added to the prestigious list next week.

A number of the 2009 inductees, including Skilton, Kelly, Greg Williams, Barry Round, Peter Bedford, Dennis Carroll, John Rantall and Mark Browning will be at the second Hall of Fame. They will also attend the Swans versus Carlton match at the SCG the previous evening, Friday April 29.

Colless says “the type of items that might be on the Heritage List include physical and tangible things such as a football ground, a grandstand or a locker room. It could be a piece of apparel, a photo, or a flag, trophy or song.”

“But it could also be something more intangible, such as a moment from a game, or an entire game.”

From next year, the Hall of Fame inductions and the addition of items to the Swans Heritage List will be incorporated into the annual Jumper Presentation before the start of the season.

Colless wants Swans supporters to be involved and engaged in the process of making additions to the Heritage List.

“Through our website, members and supporters will be able to nominate items they believe are worthy of inclusion on the Swans Heritage List, and supporters will be able to vote on those nominations,’’ he said.

Through a generous donation from one of the Sydney Swans major benefactors, 10 tickets to the Swans Hall of Fame Dinner presented by QBE, have been donated back to the Club to be given away to Members who would otherwise be unable to afford to attend. Places will be given away in pairs meaning five members in total will be selected on merit from the list of worthy candidates.
