Sydney Swans co-captain Luke Parker said the playing group place a big emphasis on ensuring the younger players at the club understand the significance of the club’s rich history.

We will celebrate that proud history this week as part of Swans Heritage Week in the lead up to the club’s birthday on June 19.

Parker said as a leader of the Club he takes it upon himself to ensure that the younger players understand the importance of where the club has come from.

“It’s an incredible history our club has and we’re really passionate about teaching that to the young boys when they get drafted to the club,” Parker said.

“We’ve got such a big supporter base in Melbourne and when we play in Melbourne it really is like playing a home game.

“It’s an incredible history that we have and it’s really important we continue to celebrate our history and link with South Melbourne.

Co-captain Josh Kennedy echoed Parker’s sentiments about the importance of sharing that knowledge with the young playing group.

“This club is so much bigger than any individual and we are all just passing through,” Kennedy said.

“Our history is what has made us today and it is a big part of our club and our teachings when new players come in.

“It is what I was taught when I first came to the club and you want to pass that on.”

Parker said it was great to still see so many of the clubs past players connected with the Swans.

“It is incredible to see legends of the club hanging around change rooms after games and still showing their faces around the club,” he said.

“They are the guys that started and have given us the opportunities to do what we do so all we do is try and make those boys proud.”
