TRAILBLAZING Canadian Mike Pyke will continue his AFL career for at least another two years after signing a new contract with the Sydney Swans.

The former rugby union international was off contract following the Swans' premiership campaign, having played a key role in the Grand Final victory over Hawthorn.

With just 28 games to his name over three years with the Swans, including only two in 2011, Pyke knew he needed a big season in 2012 if he was to earn a new deal.

Getting his opportunity in round eight following an injury to fellow ruckman Shane Mumford, Pyke would play 18 straight games to end the season, averaging over 21 hitouts and three marks per game.

"Mike has come a long way in the last four years and we are looking forward to seeing where he can get to in the next year and beyond," Swans football manager Dean Moore said.

"He has still only played 46 senior matches, so there is no doubt he will keep improving."

Ridiculed in some circles as a waste of time over his AFL journey, Pyke - who is currently holidaying back in Canada - has had the last laugh and believes he still has plenty of improvement left in him.

"Signing a new contract is very important to me," Pyke said.

"I feel like the Swans are my Australian family. There are so many people that I look up to and feel comfortable to confide in at the club, so to play for a club like this is something really special.

"Since my arrival at the club, my number one priority for every session has been to improve.

"I still feel like I have plenty of development left in me and hopefully I can add a few more strings to my bow next year."

Premiership-winning teammate Craig Bird has also signed a two-year contract extension, following his best season as a Swan.

With persistent foot injuries well behind him, Bird played every game and was used in the midfield and as a defensive forward in 2012.

The New South Welshman will remain with the Swans until at least the end of 2014.

"Craig was one of eight Swans to play all 25 matches this year and posted a top 10 finish in the club champion award," Moore said.

"He has had some injury issues over the last few years, so it was great to see him have an uninterrupted season and play some really important roles for us."
