The Swans will go into this weekend’s Sydney Derby with clarity thanks to a little help from OPSM.

The AFL sponsor visited Swans HQ this week in a move to highlight the importance of eye health and routine check-ups.

OPSM dispensing optician Tanya Davis was at the club to examine players and coaches ahead of Saturday night’s clash with the Giants.

Davis said while maintaining eye health is important for everyone, it is vital for AFL footballers.

“It’s very important,” she said.

“I could probably assume that they want to be at the top of their A-game, and vision, especially in a game where you’re looking at a ball, catching a ball or following a target, is something very important.”

The OPSM technicians performed standard eye tests on players, coaches and staff including depth perception and a colour-blindness test.

One Swan who is familiar with the importance of eye health is ruckman Shane Mumford, who worked as a welder before being drafted to an AFL club.

“(Eye health) was something I had to consider in the past being a welder, because the UV rays from the welding was really strong,” Mumford said.

“I just made sure I always had the proper equipment on when welding, otherwise you could damage your eyes pretty quickly and easily.”

Despite his past experiences, the ruckman said eye health was something that was easy to overlook.

“It’s not really something I think about too often and I think my last eye test was well over five years ago,” he said.

“You should be getting one every two years we’ve just found out today, and it’s actually covered under Medicare.

“It’s something worthwhile doing.”

And after getting the all clear from OPSM, Mumford said he should be on his game in this weekend’s match against GWS.

“I’ve passed (the eye examination) with flying colours, so I’ve got no excuses for dropping the footy on the weekend now.”
