O'Keefe forecasts Pies v Saints GF
Ryan O'Keefe says the Swans might have been beaten by this year's premier on Sunday in Collingwood
Having played each of St Kilda, Geelong and Collingwood in the past month, the Swans players are well-placed to judge their respective form heading into September.
"A St Kilda-Collingwood grand final," was O’Keefe’s verdict before a recovery session at the SCG on Monday.
"They’re a really good side. They’ve got that even balance – they’ve got those hard bodies across the field so they’re definitely a chance," he said.
"We just fell apart across every part of the ground. They’re such a good side, they just hurt us. With a quality side like that, if you put in a sub-standard performance, you’re just going to get smacked."
The Swans onballer said the group was disappointed to have let their slim finals chances slip against Collingwood.
As it turned out, a win would have kept the Swans in the finals race but O’Keefe and his teammates now face an empty September for the first time since 2002.
In a remarkable twist, the club farewelled favourite sons Paul Kelly and Andrew Dunkley in round 22 that year with a 40-point win against Richmond.
O’Keefe said the Swans were keen to mirror that result against the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night, to give retiring premiership heroes Michael O’Loughlin, Leo Barry and Jared Crouch a fitting send off.
"Those guys mean so much to us… we’ll do everything in our power to send them off on a good note," he said.
"We were really disappointed in the weekend’s game. It was the boys’ last game in front of our Melbourne supporters and we definitely don’t want to make the same mistake again.
"It’s the last game of the year, we’ve got three champions of our club that we want to send off so if we can’t muster up the energy or the enthusiasm for that game, I don’t know [when we] will."
