Waiting game for Goodes

Swans co-captain Adam Goodes will face a patient wait as he recovers from a quad injury suffered in Saturday’s match against the Crows.
Goodes, who was subbed out of last weekend’s game after pulling up in a marking contest late in the match, will miss six weeks with a high quad tear.
Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron said Goodes’ will be out of action for a few weeks before he can begin rehab for his injury.
“He’s torn the top of his quad up near the front of his hip joint,” Cameron told SwansTV.
“With a tear like that, that’s why we’re facing the length of time we are, and we need to now wait for some healing to go on, which is going to take a few weeks of healing before he is really able to start running and gradually loading his quad muscle.
“It’s approximately six weeks and these injuries do have a history of recurring so we need to take care with that, but we can start being hopeful for that kind of period.”
Cameron said the Swans medical staff will carefully assess how long the star player will be out of action.
“Mother Nature takes care of the healing and we do as much as we can for that to occur as fast as possible,” he said.
“There’s a reasonable amount of physiotherapy and some medical things as well, and it’s important to stay away from aggravating it or doing too much exercise, so it is a bit of a waiting game until some healing has occurred, and then we can start strength work and fitness work.”
Swans ruckman Shane Mumford has resumed light training after being sidelined with a back infection.
Cameron said it’s important that Mumford doesn’t take on too much, too soon.
“At the moment he’s not able to train with high intensity, so he’s just doing low-grade training at the moment like football conditioning, weights and so on,” he said.
“We’re still waiting to get the final all clear that the infection is completely under control before we increase his intensity of training.
“There is a chance that if we increase the intensity that we stir things up so it’s important to wait for that all clear and then we’ll up the ante.”
In other injury news, Matt Spangher and Jordan Lockyer should make their return to the Swans reserves this week.
“Both are coming back from hamstring injuries,” Cameron said.
“Matt Spangher’s has been a longer-term one, while Jordan has only been out for three weeks.
“Both are returning to training and Matt started training last week and both should be joining the reserves team.”
