From time to time at the Swans we organise a team dinner (to be more specific we get together and eat dinner, not get together and cook dinner). It’s all about getting together mid-week in a new environment away from the club and building better relationships with our fellow team mates. Special mention must go to the chefs on these nights who are told to cater for 40, when in fact we probably consume an amount of food which could comfortably feed a small country for a week.
Recently we’ve been eating at The Imperial Hotel in Paddington. We sit and chat a bit about footy, but mostly all things non-football. However, a recent discovery has meant the team dinners have taken a new twist. It’s added a component of fear and dread to the night, but it’s not tofu… it’s the Karaoke machine!
After a heated debate somehow we agreed that there would be four “duets” sung throughout the night. I use the word “duets” loosely as I don’t know of a word that exists that describes two people yelling simultaneously.
I was sitting next to Craig Bird who was getting quite nervous. I tried to comfort him by saying “If there’s only 4 duets to be sung and 40 blokes it’s only a one in five chance of having to sing”.
The selection process was carried out and what do you know, Craig Bird was called up! Stiff Birdy.
Think the worst performance you’ve ever seen on Eurovision, magnify that by 100, take away the girls and the dancing and that’s about where we are at. It was a bit of a laugh and we all had good fun, especially those of us who didn’t have to sing. It certainly added a new element to the team dinner as it took everyone out of their comfort zone. Special mention must go to Ryan O’Keefe, Dan Hannebery and Mike Pyke who were the stand-outs on the night.
Kieren Jack is now on Twitter. Get on board @kjack_15. Be sure to check out his profile picture too which shows him high-fiving Goodesy after putting a big hit on Matt Spangher (back when Spang played for West Coast). Despite this happening a few years ago Kizza still loves to reminisce about that contest!
It was great to have a win against the Bulldogs, but now we’re all focused on our next game against Essendon on Saturday night. Hope all our Melbourne fans can come along and cheer us on at Etihad Stadium.
