Sydney Swans forward Joel Amartey is relishing every minute he spends on the field. The 21-year-old was one of many players affected when Covid-19 saw the VFL competition abandoned in 2020.

"My goal is to maintain my fitness, not get injured and play as many games as I can this year. To play a few games in the senior team is the ultimate goal by the end of the season. Hopefully I can piece some strong form together, be consistent and get that call up.”

The tall forward is leaning on some of the club’s greats to take his game to the next level as he pushes for more opportunities with the senior squad.

“Jeremy Laidler has been really influential, and then some of the players like Sam Reid and Buddy [Franklin] obviously have been huge for me. They help me with the basics of the game, as well as teaching the crafts of a tall forward.

It’s unreal when you have sort of players go out of their way during training to teach you the tricks of each position.”

While Amartey spends most of his time in the forward line, he is also further developing his skillset in the ruck.

“Tom Hickey has been unbelievable this year, he’s been doing some work with me in the ruck so when I play there I bring lots of energy, and all that follow up stuff that you can piece together.“

Amartey travelled with the senior side to Perth as an emergency for the Swans clash against Freemantle tomorrow.
