Young midfielder Matthew Roberts has extended his commitment to the Sydney Swans until at least the end of 2025, signing a two-year contract extension.

The South Australian was selected with pick 34 in the 2021 NAB AFL Draft, making his debut in Sydney’s Round 11 victory over Richmond earlier this season.

A hard-working midfielder with versatility to play across half back, Roberts has impressed with strong performances in the VFL competition this season.  A product of South Adelaide Football Club in the SANFL and South Australian state representative at underage level, Roberts has quickly shown some of the ball winning traits and game awareness that saw him highly rated at last year’s national draft.

Roberts’ form in the VFL has been consistent this season, averaging 23 possessions a game.

Sydney Swans Executive General Manager – Football, Charlie Gardiner, said the 18-year-old has made an impressive start to his AFL career.

“Matty is a terrific young man with a quiet maturity and a fantastic willingness to work hard and improve,” Gardiner said.

“To play senior football in your first season is credit to the hard work Matty has been doing both on and off the field.

“He is learning all the time and we are excited to see him continue to develop his game over the next couple of years in the red and white.”
