Maurice Goolagong is both an accomplished artist and athlete.

Before Buddy1000 there was Maurice1000 – when in 2011, Maurice became the first player to kick 1000 goals in the AFL’s Black Diamonds League, while last year Maurice was an inaugural inductee into the New South Wales Australian Football Hall of Fame.

Today, we at the Sydney Swans are privileged to benefit from Maurice’s valuable experience as he is the head coach of our Central Coast ARA First Nation’s Academy.

We are also grateful for his contribution to our club this Sir Doug Nicholls Round through his art.

On Sunday, we will exchange a gift with Melbourne ahead of our game at the MCG. The artwork, painted by Maurice, features two outer circles representing the Sydney Swans and Melbourne.

The U shapes around the circles represent Past, Present, Future players, while the circle in the middle with the hand represents strength and unity for First Nations people.

The blue and white dots represent Sydney and the coastline.

It’s the second artwork Maurice has created for us this Sir Doug Nicholls Round. The other artwork, that was gifted to Carlton in Marn Grook at the SCG, also pays homage to the theme for Sir Doug Nicholls Round, Past Legacies, Future Legends.

The Sydney Swans would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Maurice for both gifts, as well as his immense contribution to our great game.
