Sydney Swans coach Dean Cox has made two forced changes to his side to take on Fremantle in Friday night’s Preliminary Final at the SCG.

Justin McInerney and Lewis Melican come into the side at the expense of Callum Mills (ACL) while Harry Cunningham misses with a calf injury sustained during the week at training.

It will be McInerney’s first AFL match since the Swans’ narrow win over St. Kilda in Round 13.

Cox said it was also a tough decision to leave Joel Amartey out.

“Justin will play and Joel won’t. That’s just the decision we had to make,” Cox said.

“Obviously our forward line functioned really well with the way it was set up the first time (this finals series).

“We understand Fremantle’s defence and how strong they are in that aspect of the ground, and it’s on all our players, certainly in our front half, to try to nullify and kick a score that we need.

“Obviously with Justin, he’s had a lot of work put in throughout this period of time, and now it’s a matter of backing him in.”

Cunningham’s minor calf injury at training means Melican returns as a tall defender to try to negate Fremantle’s three-pronged forward line.

“At training yesterday (Cunningham) pulled up a bit tight in his calf and had a scan late last night, spoke to him this morning and it just wasn’t quite right,” Cox said.

“Melican is an experienced player and has been playing some good football in the VFL and training really hard over the past couple of weeks. He will come in and have to do his role which is what we expect.

Friday night’s Preliminary Final is officially a sellout with more than 43 thousand fans expected to pack into the SCG.

“We are absolutely rapt with the support. The noise of the first final was unbelievable, and we expect it to be louder again tomorrow night,’ Cox said.

“I can’t wait to hear the Sydney chant right from when the team gets onto the ground until the end.”

The Swans take on Fremantle at 7.40pm on Friday at the SCG.
