Tom McCartin finished the 2026 season with career-best numbers, a fresh look at leadership, and stronger admiration from the red and white faithful.
The key defender finished the 2026 season with an average of 18.6 disposals, 1.8 tackles and 5.6 spoils, all well above the 26-year-old's previous season bests.
When reflecting on the 2026 season, McCartin did not immediately point to a moment of a particular game, but instead to the joy he’s had in watching his younger teammates grow and thrive, especially in crucial moments.
“I think seeing some kids like Will Edwards, playing with him, seeing him develop over the last few years and playing some good games with him and seeing him develop was really special, McCartin said.
“I think obviously playing finals is unbelievable and the turnout from the fans. I think just so many little wins along the way and the away trips are fun, and we obviously had a great season and finished second on the ladder, which was amazing.
“It was not the way we wanted to finish for the Premiership Cup, but I think we're building to something pretty special.”
Off the field, McCartin took a massive step towards being a leader within the playing group, and especially with so many young Swans getting their opportunity this season, McCartin loved the chance to advance his ability outside of the playing realm.
“It's probably something I said earlier in the year with Coxy and some of the leaders that I wanted to kind of help a bit more in that space,” McCartin said.
“Whether it's having a leadership title or not, but just having more role around the club and then within the backline too, just trying to take probably the next step with my leadership because I feel like I'm probably ready for that.”
The overarching message from McCartin before wrapping up his commitments with the club for the 2026 season was applause and gratitude for the many Swans supporters who rode the highs and lows with the team throughout the season.
“[The fans support] meant the world.”
“I actually walked back with my mum, dad and Paddy and the reception that we got, walking back into the club rooms and dad literally said, I can't believe how good the Swans fans are and how loyal they are.”
“The Swans and South Melbourne fans are so loyal, and I just can't thank them enough, and I feel like, you know, it's been obviously a tough period this year, but I think it almost brings you closer and builds a club tighter and closer when faced with adversity.”
“I think the support they gave us this year was unbelievable, and as I said before, I think they are the most loyal fan base in the club, in the AFL, and the way they could rally together over the last three weeks was so special for all the boys and me.
“So can't wait for 2027 and it's going to be a good one, I can tell.”
