Swans midfielder Jude Bolton said his team will need to be at the top of their game when they take on Fremantle this weekend.

Bolton, who will line up for the Swans in their first home game of the season at the SCG on Saturday, said the Dockers victory over Geelong was evidence of just how tough an opponent Fremantle will be this season.

“We were extremely impressed with the way (Fremantle) jumped Geelong early on, and I think they kicked the first five or six goals,” he said.

“They are playing a really tough brand of footy and to come away with the contested ball win against Geelong and the victory was really impressive.”

Bolton said the Swans performance in the first quarter will be key to getting on top of the Dockers.

“We know we need to get off to a good start,” Bolton said.

“I think especially at the SCG, centre clearances are important out of here because it is a slightly shorter ground so you really need to be winning the ball out of the middle, and the way (Fremantle) jumped Geelong was so impressive.”

Bolton added that he believes the Swans have the pace to match the Dockers speedy midfield including their talented youngsters Nat Fyfe and Stephen Hill.

“I think Freo have got super pace, but we do feel like we have some weapons,” he said.

“Jetta and obviously Gazza Rohan, they are express sort of players…so we feel that we’ve got some real pace.

“Kieren Jack is also quick, so we’ve just got to get the ball in their hands and let them break down the lines.”

The Swans will be keen to make amends for their most recent performance against Freo, which saw them fall short by 11 points at the SCG in round 17 last year.

Bolton said last year’s loss was the result of poor discipline, which saw the Swans concede a number of goals through free kicks.

“I think it was disappointing (last time we played them) just the number of free kick goals, I think we gave away about eight free kick goals that game,” he said.

“Geelong certainly gave away four or five (last week) so certainly discipline against Freo is a really important factor.”

Swans coach John Longmire agreed that discipline was going to be a vital factor to his team’s performance on Saturday.

“We need to be really disciplined against Fremantle,” he said.

“We need to make sure we give a strong performance this week, but also a disciplined performance.

“We can talk about it but we need to make sure we do it on Saturday.”
