Longmire backs Pyke strike
John Longmire says Swans ruckman Mike Pyke should be fit to fire against Hawthorn after hurting his ankle last Sunday
SYDNEY Swans coach John Longmire says ruckman Mike Pyke is likely to come up from the ankle injury that forced him from the ground during the Swans' victory over the Western Bulldogs on Sunday.
Pyke was substituted early in the last quarter after playing arguably his best game for the Swans during their 82-point victory, having kicked three goals and taken four contested marks.
"We expect him to train tomorrow," Longmire said on SEN's Morning Glory program.
"He should be fine."
Longmire said he wouldn’t take too much from the Swans' victory over Hawthorn at Aurora Stadium in round five going into this Saturday's game against the Hawks at the SCG.
The Swans and the Hawks go into the game sitting first and second on the ladder respectively.
Longmire noted that there would be personnel changes from the round five match, in which Hawthorn half-back Grant Birchall was unavailable and defender Josh Gibson went off injured during the second quarter.
"You don’t delve into that game too deeply. You go on recent form," he said.
Longmire said he was unhappy with the Swans' performance last weekend in failing to curb Bulldogs midfielder Ryan Griffen, who had 47 disposals.
"We weren't happy with that," he said.
"We don't like opposition players just waltzing around doing that.
"To his credit, he played one of the best games I've seen him play.
"We had a couple of good players going there [tagging him] but they couldn’t stop him."
Longmire said the Swans are happy to play on Saturday at the SCG rather than the larger ANZ Stadium, which some have suggested might suit their game better.
"We're playing at our home ground, which is fantastic," he said.
