Swans Reserves Battle it out to Remain Undefeated

The Sydney Swans Reserves continuedtheir unbeaten run in the AFL Canberra competition on Saturday, beating Eastlake by 33 points atManuka Oval, in one of their closest games of the season.

At quarter time the Swans were only one pointbehind Eastlakewith each team only kicking two goals for the term. Matthew Davis kicked theSwans’ first seven minutes into the quarter and goaled again at the halfwaymark.

Flooding in the secondquarter made it hard for the Swans to goal but they managed to kick four with JaredCrouch starting the run with a clever major. Simon Phillips goaled twice beforeLuke Vogels ended the quarter with the goal that put the Swans six points infront at the main break.

Eastlake continued to play man-on-man in the second half andthe Swans found it tough to get away but with Ryan Brabazon and Daviscontinually pushing, the Swans began to lift. They extended the margin to 15points by three quarter time with goals to Kristin Thornton, Vogels andDavis. 

According to Reserves’ TeamManager, Graeme Cocks, coach Brett Alison urged the Swans to “use their fitnessand play smarter football” in the three quarter time huddle. The Swans went onto kick another four goals and kept Eastlaketo one. Jonathan Simpkin, Matthew O’Dwyer, Earl Shaw and top-up player Breusteach kicked a goal for the Swans.

Brabazon was again one ofthe best in the Reserves, after just two years on the Swans’ list, while Davisand Moore also made the Swans’ best. Phillips, with two goals, Crouch andVogels were also impressive.

The Swans need two more winsto end the season undefeated and next week, Saturday August 25, they take onTuggeranong at Greenway Oval at 2pm.
