What do you get when you cross 26 footballers with a new Volkswagen Scirocco R and a racetrack?  Driver safety education of course.

After their 63-point round one victory against GWS, the Swans spent a day last week at Eastern Creek Raceway where they undertook a Volkswagen Driving Experience course.

Run by professional instructors, the course saw the players learn the intricacies of driving safely before taking on the toughest of all challenges - a hot lap around Eastern Creek - in an endeavour to hone their motoring skills.

In their Volkswagens, the players took on advanced exercises including slalom, swerve and avoid, as well as high speed wet weather steering and braking.

To finish it all off and to put everything into practice they took the Volkswagen Scirocco R, Golf GTI and Golf R on a hot lap around Eastern Creek.

It was a thrill enjoyed by all players including the veteran of the group, Jude Bolton.

“It’s been pretty amazing at Eastern Creek … I think I got up to about 190-200 km/h on the straight down there and slid around a few cones so it was great fun,” Bolton said.

Although, for others it was clear they had room for improvement and benefited immensely from the course.

“I think Heath Grundy hit five cones in one space - I wasn’t in his group, thankfully - but the slalom courses are certainly pretty tough,” Bolton said.

“It’s great having the professional instructors with you (because) we really pushed these Volkswagens.”

When Shane Mumford first joined the Swans he was a bit of a speed junkie but he’s quietly put his favourite motorbike aside.

While he can “walk the walk” on the racetrack according to his teammates he was amazed at not only how quick and safe the new Volkswagen Golf GTI’s are but how spacious they are as well - particularly for a man that’s 199cm and 108kg.

“It’s surprising, they’re actually pretty roomy. I don’t know if you’d be too comfortable sitting behind me but I fit into the front quite nicely,” Mumford said.
