If you only see us on game day or training days, you’d think pretty much the only thing Swans players ever get around in is red shorts and tracksuit pants.

But I have to say there are some players at the Swans who take a very strong interest in fashion and their own appearance.

There are a couple of different groups when it comes to clothes.

Basically, there are those boys with fashion sense, and those with absolutely no fashion sense.

When Gary Rohan first moved to Sydney from the small town of Cobden in country Victoria, he went looking for a bit of fashion advice.

At first he turned to Dan Currie, or Crusher as we call him, who shares a house with Gary and me.

Crusher tried to give Gary fashion tips, but he quickly turned away from him and looked to blokes like Jarrad McVeigh and Jude Bolton because he found out Crusher had no fashion sense whatsoever.

Crusher’s favourite winter look is these big lab coats that make him look like Inspector Gadget,…which says a lot.

Birdy (Craig Bird) has been copping a bit from the boys recently too. He had a stress fracture in his foot and it flared up again, so now he is on strict orders to wear joggers all the time, no matter where he goes, no matter what else he’s wearing. We think he’s trying to make runners the new look for August 2010.

And then there’s Ed Barlow. He probably needs his own special fashion category. His contribution to the world of fashion, apart from single-handedly reviving flannelette shirts, is to constantly wear his pants well below where they should be. He actually takes pride in it, and I don’t know whether it’s because he thinks it looks good, or he just wants to annoy people…

A few of the older guys have a bit of style about them. Kirky is right up there, and Jude is always looking good. Having his own fashion label, Jon Pumper, helps in that department.

Jets is the most inventive in terms of stuff to wear…and a good bargain hunter, which showed up when he went back to Bunbury and bought himself a new pair of jeans and shoes for a total of 10 dollars.

And you can tell the guys who want to get on in the world. Recently one of our rookie players, Nathan Gordon (Nipper) really started to lift his game and take it up to the senior players in the kits he’s wearing to the club each day.

Even with our early morning match review sessions - when you get up and it’s cold and you generally throw on your trakkies - Nipper now comes in fully kitted up with jeans, leather jackets, scarves.

And then we found out last week that Nipper has been elevated from the rookie list to the senior list, so it all makes sense.

But in the end, it doesn’t matter whether you’ve got good or bad fashion sense, in winter you want to be warm and comfortable, and whether you wear jeans or trakkie pants it doesn’t bother me.

But what does bother me is Jarred Moore constantly wearing board shorts and thongs on minus five degree days. That’s definitely a case of no fashion sense, in fact no sense at all.…
