BROWNLOW medallist and former Swans captain Paul Kelly says it could be more than 12 months until he makes a full recovery from a motorbike accident earlier this year.

Kelly, who is still unable to walk after the March incident, said he was struggling to recover from the broken rib and hip he suffered.

Kelly was injured when attempting a motorbike stunt with daredevil group Nitro Circus in Melbourne.

"I can't work, I spent a month in bed, literally in bed … it's not good," Kelly said.

"If you're going to break something you'd want to make sure it's not your hip, because it just slows you up totally."

To make matters worse for the 42-year-old, his house was also flooded in March.

"We got flooded out back in March, so we're out of the house for the next few months so as you can imagine there's stuff everywhere to do and it's pretty tough," he said.

"I had a bad run there for a few months, that's for sure.

"It's having a big impact, I suppose, but I'm getting towards the end of it now so hopefully in another couple of weeks I can start to walk and I'm pretty keen to just walk around the block even, that would be great."

Kelly said it could be a year or longer until he fully recovers.

"It was just bad luck really, just unfortunate.

"I'm still on crutches, it's 10 weeks ago now and it was always going to be three months on the crutches, so yeah, it's just slow.

"It was just one of those freak things. I think the bike landed on me, and that was what broke me.

"But it was just a freak thing, I could have so easily just fallen off and got back on and away I went, it was just unlucky, mate, it's just the way it goes."

Kelly said he was having scans in two weeks that would determine when he would be able to walk again.

"It's tough for my wife, she's kept the fort going, so she's gone full-time at the moment," Kelly said.

"I got to drive again a couple of weeks ago so at least I can do the running around and drop the kids off and that sort of stuff, but I haven't worked at all since the crash."
