Young Swan Ben Ronke has shattered the record books in a seven-goal blitz in Sydney’s eight-point win over Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday night.
The 20-year-old, who had made his AFL debut just two weeks earlier in Sydney’s win over the Geelong Cats in Round 6, booted five goals in the first half and four in the opening term.
In doing so, the lively forward became the first Swan to kick four first-term goals since Sydney great Barry Hall in Round 2, 2002 against St Kilda.
Ronke and Hall are now the only two Swans to have kicked four first-quarter majors this century.
Ronke and teammate Lance Franklin are now also the only two Swans to have kicked five first-half goals since coach John Longmire took control in 2011.
Franklin had five before half-time in Sydney’s clash with the Brisbane Lions in Round 7 last year and finished with eight for the night as the Swans secured their first win of the season.
The four-time Coleman Medallist then bagged another five first-half majors in Sydney’s opening-round win over the West Coast Eagles this season and again finished with eight.
But with five in the bag at the main break Ronke was hungry for more.
In ploughing on to his seven-goal haul he joined Franklin as one of just two Swans to have kicked seven goals in a game under Longmire’s reign.
Franklin has kicked seven or more goals in a game on six occasions since joining the Swans in 2014 and his 10-goal haul against Carlton in Round 23 last season tops the lot.
At 20 years and 144 days, Ronke also became the youngest Swan to collect seven goals in a game since Silvio Foschini in Round 4, 1982.
He became the youngest player competition-wide to do so since GWS star Jeremy Cameron in Round 18, 2013 and the first player of any age to do so at the MCG since former Collingwood forward Travis Cloke in Round 10, 2015.
But Ronke prides his game on relentless defensive pressure and sees hitting the scoreboard as a bonus – and it was the tackle-happy boy from the Calder Cannons who again delivered in the Swans’ win.
Becoming the first player in VFL-AFL history to finish with seven goals and 10 tackles was among the avalanche of records.
Ronke kicked his first of the night at the four-minute mark of the opening term when he collected a Dean Towers handball and snapped a goal from the right-forward pocket.
He had his second three minutes later after he had put on the afterburners to soccer the Sherrin through from the goal square.
But perhaps the most important of the night was his seventh as it sealed the come-from-behind win.
Gary Rohan had sent a soaring kick from outside 50 and Ronke would compose himself under a mountain of pressure to take a contested grab in the goal square and slot the set shot.
The goal extended Sydney’s lead from two points to eight with 60-odd seconds on the clock and pencilled in the four competition points.
